Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City - Monday, 24 March, 2014 The RED-NECKED GREBE continued at the reservoir, seen swimming at 10:30 a.m. some way off the north pump-house building & vicinity. Otherwise many ducks & some other birds seemed to have departed the reservoir since the day before. A drake American Wigeon was still present, with a small number of N. Shovelers at the ne part of the reservoir; a drake Red-breasted Merganser also continues, and there were still a few Ruddy Ducks, Hooded Mergansers, and other regulars, but the overall number of birds was hugely reduced from 24 hrs. prior. There were a couple of drake Wood Ducks on the Lake, & at least 30 N. Shovelers there; additional N. Shovelers were at the Meer, and on Turtle Pond. An adult Black-crowned Night-Heron continued at Hallett Sanctuary overlooking the Pond. A fair number of "red" Fox Sparrows were seen again, including a flock of at least 8 in one small area in the Ramble's west edges. As have been seen for several days already, a few Eastern Phoebes are about in various areas. I watched 2 along the s. edges of Sheep Meadow, hawking bugs out of the lawn grass as the air temp. registered below 32 F. As far as I'm aware, a Wilson's Snipe noted 2 days ago at the Meer had not been found again; the snipe was not reported to this list. In the Ramble & at Cedar Hill (east of the ramble) two Baltimore Orioles & the long-lingering drab- plumaged (since its discovery in the park Feb. 9) PINE WARBLER continue.
