I have learned the falcon was seen both Friday and again today (not sure about
Thursday) but is not being posted on NYS birds --apparently on Facebook only.
As an anachronism who has never joined Facebook (and perhaps I'm not alone) a
post on NYS birds would be appreciated either positive or ne

Apologies. It was extremely cold, and I should have provided more detail. The
bird appeared in the tall spruce south of Old Fort Road in Wallkill at 2:58 PM.
It stayed put for 45 minutes-an hour before flying south, where it disappeared
over a hill.

Although I know that Zach's email is in reference to the Wallkill Gyr, it
still might be helpful to out-of-state birders and others to provide a more
specific location when posting these updates. There have been other
Gyrfalcons in the state this year (and elsewhere in the northeast), so some

As I have had many inquiries to as to parking at the "new location" for the
bird, I thought I should update what I know (think).
Approx. 5 minutes after my last post, that noted a "new location", the bird
flew in a straight line toward the direction of Old Fort Rd. Although we were

Currently perched on ground on first shoreline across water on north

Had the Gyrfalcon from far away at Gilgo Bch. this am from about 930 to 1140am.
It was in the same area off of the main lot as previously reported. Also had
a flock of about 50 White-winged Crossbills, 6 Killdeer, and 4 Horned Larks
near the CG Station.

Sorry I forgot to say that no cars are allowed in the cedar marina parking lot.
We asked permission from one of the construction workers before entering the
parking lot.

We had excellent looks at the bird from the Cedar Beach Marina parking lot at 2
pm. It was perched on the leftmost of three junipers pretty much straight out
from the parking lot, perhaps a half mile away. It hung around for about 15
minutes, was harassed by a harrier, and then flew to the west.
Not seen in the last 2.5 hours
Bird on platform is a peregrine

Here is what Carl Safina had to say about where he saw the Gyr yesterday at
Jones Beach (Nassau Co.),
I suspect that before we saw it, it went from Zach’s, where I suspect it
was the cause of the mass uprising of Brant that we saw (but did not see a
raptor then) up the parkway, where we first saw

Which, actually, I think is nearly as interesting as a Gyrfalcon, but
maybe I'm alone in holding that sentiment?
