On Jamaica Bay's East Pond, there was a Buff-breasted Sandpiper on the sand spit north of the Raunt late this morning - for a little while until a Peregrine caused everything to shuffle. Also present were at least 6 Western Sandpipers and 2 Pectoral Sandpipers. Overall numbers of shorebirds look go

I birded the East Pond today on two tide cycles. First this morning and then later this afternoon. Not a lot of Shorebirds and a marauding Peregrine Falcon made the birds quite skittish. I would estimate the numbers at around 200 and I am being generous. In total 15 species of Shorebirds. The

I have received several inquiries over the past few days about the status of the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Queens Co. Rather than respond individually, I am putting out a PSA. As most of you know, the East Pond water level suffered a setback due to recent heavy rains. NPS has kep

Hi all, In the past couple of years we've had major problems getting the refuge staff to lower the water levels on the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to proper levels. The importance of this is for the returning shorebirds having a place to both feed and roost. I'm happy to report that

This morning, I cleared out the north end trail on the west side of the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, making it usable for the 2017 Shorebird Season. The water level on the pond is high and I would advise against attempting to bird the pond for now. Compounding the water level probl
