Jones Beach West End 21 August

After a perusal of the bar at Short Beach Island, a walk through the median and
a return to the marina, an all dark BALD EAGLE flew over coming from the
south at 10:45 AM. The eagle was accompanied be a flock of screaming terns.
It momentarily landed in the phragmites on the island and then took off flying
NE and out of sight, The shorebirds, terns, cormorants and geese had already
irrupted and were gone alerting me to the presence of a large menace before it
arrived.

Some of the birds gradually drifted back. but 15 minutes later, another
irruption. This time the EAGLE came drifting in from the east flying high over
the island and again drifting north. Gradually the birds returned. At
11:30AM, the eagle made a third pass (still accompanied by the terns), again
preceded by a massive irruption of birds.

The 3 Wimbrel seen yesterday were not located today. There were two
GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHERS in the median today. Land birds were scarce.
