David Burg, Deborah Alperin and I found a Lapland Longspur among a large flock
of Horned Larks by the second parking lot on the way to Crookes Point in Great
Kills park on Staten Island today at around 10;30 AM. I submitted an eBird
report with a poor photo.

At about 11:00am at the north-eastern side of the island where the Sunken
Meadow Loop passes closest to the Sound a very confiding Lapland Longspur
was feeding on the short grass. Pictures at my Flickr site.

did not discover it, another birder checking the island just before I
arrived did, first name Paul - and he gave me perfect d

I have encountered this same type of absurd aggressive behavior from
them in the same area, but it was also a few years ago. I've thought it
might be a particular superior officer who encourages this harassment.
On another occasion, in freezing weather, kids were doing wheelies in
their cars i
Not so with the NYS Park Police. But their days may be numbered. 'bout time.

Every once in a while they get a newbie who is trying to prove themselves,
I ran into itat Robert Moses a couple of years ago. They are technically
correct they just haven't learned to exercise judgement yet.

Have not the park police forces ceased to exist as a separate entity, having
been absorbed into their respective county police forces? There might be some
bitterness among them.

To Michael's observation re: Park Police.
I personally did not have any encounters but many birders did today.
I have never seen the Park Police this aggressive as I have seen them today
at West End Jones Beach. Some of the reasons some birders were stopped for
bordered on ludicrous.
For example
took a quick trip to we2, a single nicely colored chestnut Lapland Longspur was
seen in the median before the nature center with a group of horned larks. park
police then drove through the flock and dispersed the birds (and the birders).
time was around 4pm

A Lapland Longspur was with 30 + Horned Larks at the Coast Guard Station,
had relocated from the median.

There was just a Lapland Longspur traveling with a flock of about 20 Snow
Buntings in the Field 7 parking lot at Hecksher State Park.
The flock is very mobile and the blustery conditions seem to be keeping them on
the move. They were last seen heading west toward Field 6.

Coast Guard Station in the same place as previously reported, between
the restrooms and the gazebo. Barbara Saunders and I only saw two
Lapland Longspurs this morning. The wind has really picked up!

Sorry for the late report, but there was a single Lapland Longspur at
Floyd Bennett Field yesterday afternoon. It was within a flock of 22
Horned Larks on the cricket field. Here's a link to a map of Floyd
Bennett Field with the various areas labeled.
