Following on a Nov. 17, '09 Newfoundland sighting of a Common Shelduck (an Eurasian species which has been regular as a migrant west to at least Iceland. The Newfoundland shelduck was seen only on the one day; photos of it by observer B. Mactavish are available at surfbirds.com - N. American Rarities gallery) there has been a sighting of this species (also found as an occasional escapee from waterfowl collections in N. America) in Massachusetts, with some discussion as to a possibility that these latter 2 birds are of natural occurrence in their respective locations. Updates for the Massachusetts Common Shelduck are on their state list-serve archived (short-term) at: http://www.birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/MASS.html or (long-term) at: http://www.virtualbirder.com/bmail/massbird/200912/calendar.html

A group of 8 American White Pelicans had been followed down the coast from (likely the same group in) Maine, through Rhode Island and Connecticut... perhaps moving into NY waters by now, if not already passed by to New Jersey.

Elsewhere, an Ivory Gull continued in Cape May New Jersey thru late Monday; a male Phainopepla was seen again at a site near Toronto Canada.

And from a couple of intrepid observers came N.Y. City reports for the Ash-throated Flycatcher continuing at Cohancy St. in Queens, a Rufous Hummingbird continuing in Staten Island & a Summer Tanager continuing (with a young Red-headed Woodpecker nearby) also in Staten Island, all thru Monday, Dec. 7th. (The reports were posted to the CT-Birds list.)

Good birding,

Tom Fiore,
Manhattan
