This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for Friday, June 1st 2012 at 8pm. The highlights of today's tape are SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER, MISSISSIPPI KITE, ARCTIC TERN, WHITE-FACED IBIS, BLACK-NECKED STILT, CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOW, MANX SHEARWATER, WILSON'S PHALAROPE and YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER. A couple of nice rarities showed up Tuesday along the Jones Beach strip. First a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER seen briefly at the eastern end of the Gilgo community in the morning and then a BLACK-NECKED STILT last seen in mid afternoon along the edge of Zach's Bay at Jones Beach. Both birds disappeared quickly but could remain in the area. Last Saturday up at Sterling Forest State Park in Orange County a MISSISSIPPI KITE was spotted around the visitors center off Old Forge Road. On Sunday morning this adult male was observed in nest building activity and by Monday afternoon it had attracted a subadult female to the location. The male was still being seen at the same location on Thursday but the female has apparently not been noted since Tuesday morning. The visitors center is off Old Forge Road a semicircular road coming off the western side of Long Meadow Road this the north-south road through the park intersecting Route 17A at its north end. A MOURNING WARBLER was at the kite site Sunday and Sterling Forest is also the nesting area for a wide variety of birds from BARRED OWL and EASTERN WHIP-POOR-WILL to over a dozen species of warblers including GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, CERULEAN WARBLER, WORM-EATING WARBLER and HOODED WARBLER. When visiting these nesting areas please keep any disturbance to an absolute minimum. The presumably lingering WHITE-FACED IBIS at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge was spotted again last Saturday this time with Glossy Ibis along the eastern shore of the East Pond above The Raunt. Immature male COMMON EIDER on the East Pond was also a surprise there and other birds at the bay Saturday featured a GULL-BILLED TERN over the marsh south of the West Pond and an adult RED-HEADED WOODPECKER in the North Garden. Another WHITE-FACED IBIS has been seen irregularly on Scoy Pond on the Graves Estate in the Northwest Woods section of East Hampton the latest sighting on Monday. Last Sunday 4 different ARCTIC TERNS were spotted on the tidal flats at the north side of Cupsogue County Park in West Hampton Dunes. Two different birds were also seen there on Sunday with additional sightings of single Arctics during the week and 4 more were reported there today. Visiting time to the flats seems to be most productive on the rising tide. A variety of other terns there has also included ROSEATE and FORSTER'S plus a ROYAL on Wednesday. Among the mass of shorebirds there and at nearby Pike's Beach have been a small number of WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS plus 2 flyby WHIMBREL last Monday with a female WILSON'S PHALAROPE present Saturday at Pike's. All the shorebirds there were panicked Monday when a dark PARASITIC JAEGER came cruising down the bay shore. Two more WILSON'S PHALAROPES have been noted on the flats at Mecox from Sunday to at least Wednesday. A CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOW heard last Saturday just south of the Quogue Wildlife Center along Old Meeting House Road has also been heard in the same area during the week. Seawatching has been rewarding when fog has not been a problem. Besides the widespread SOOTY SHEARWATERS with 54 plus off Robert Moses State Park field 2 last Saturday a MANX SHEARWATER passed by Moses field 2 Monday with another there on Thursday afternoon. Two WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS were spotted off Moses and Cupsogue on Saturday and PARASITIC JAEGERS included 2 Saturday off Moses where BLACK and ROYAL TERNS were also reported. The singing YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was still at Connetquot River State Park in Oakdale on Wednesday along the road to the fish hatchery. Good numbers of GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS are nesting at the Calverton Grasslands at the former Grumman Airport. Late season migrants in Central Park this week have featured YELLOW-BILLED and BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS, ACADIAN FLYCATCHER, MOURNING WARBLER and a KENTUCKY WARBLER reported from the north end last Saturday. An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was in Rye this morning. To phone in reports on Long Island, call Tony Lauro at (631) 734-4126, or weekdays call Tom Burke at (212) 372-1483.
