BEGIN TAPE

Greetings. This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for Friday, August 21st 2009
at 11pm. The highlights of today's tape are SANDWICH TERN, AMERICAN AVOCET,
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, MARBLED GODWIT, WILSON'S PHALAROPE, WHIMBREL,
AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, Long Island COMMON RAVENS and PROTHONOTARY WARBLER.

As hoped for the shorebird variety at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge has
been improving recently. On the East Pond an AMERICAN AVOCET found at the
north end Wednesday was present Friday and the less reliable MARBLED GODWIT
was also spotted on the East Pond Wednesday and Thursday. A single WILSON'S
PHALAROPE residing at the north end of the East Pond Wednesday was joined by
2 others by Friday and the adult AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER found last week on
the pond was still sitting in with the Black-bellied Plovers at the north
end today. Other shorebirds on the East Pond lately have featured a
LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER or two and a small number of PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and
several WESTERN SANDPIPER, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER and STILT SANDPIPERS.

Shorebirds out east included the first BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER of the fall,
this an adult seen on the beach at Georgica Pond in Easthampton last Sunday.
At Mecox Bay, still open to the ocean and with good flats at least until
this storm, on Thursday, 2 MARBLED GODWITS were present with 1 remaining to
today. Also on the flats this evening, perhaps partly due to the storm, were
2 SANDWICH TERNS and 6 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS these joined by 3 ROSEATE
TERNS, 5 BLACK TERNS and 25 FORSTER'S TERNS. Other shorebirds have included
WESTERN SANDPIPER and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS and a couple of CORY'S
SHEARWATERS were seen offshore this evening. Last Saturday birds at Mecox
included 2 WHIMBRELS, 6 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, 2 juvenile Eastern WILLETS and a
BLACK TERN.

At Pike's Beach and adjacent Cupsogue County Park in Westhampton Dunes on
Wednesday there were 30 ROYAL TERNS and 4 BLACK TERNS.

Most interesting among the land birds lately has been the immature
PROTHONOTARY WARBLER lingering in Prospect Park Brooklyn first found Friday.
It stayed in the foliage around Lily Pond at least Wednesday.

Land bird highlights in Central Park featured YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER at
the north end Tuesday and a HOODED WARBLER staying up there from Saturday to
Tuesday.

Perhaps the most interesting of the passerines however were the 2 COMMON
RAVENS seen again in Roslyn Harbor back on the 11th. When seen around the
Nassau County Art Museum or the William Bryant Preserve these ravens are
usually on or near the black tower off Northern Boulevard west of Glen Cove
Road.

An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER visited Piermont Pier in Rockland County Monday
afternoon.

For the next 3 weeks Tony Lauro will be handling the rare bird alert. Please
call Tony with your reports at (631) 734-4126.

This service is sponsored by the Linnaean Society of New York and the
National Audubon Society.
