Highlights of reports received January 31 through February 7 from the Niagara Frontier Region include Niagara River GULLS and WATERFOWL, RUBY-CR. KINGLET and YELLOW-B. SAPSUCKER. Waterbird reports from the length of the Niagara River this week. At the Lewiston Reservoir on the lower river, 2 THAYER'S GULLS, 32 ICELAND GULLS, 5 L. BLACK-B. GULL, 12 GLAUCOUS GULLS and three HERRING GULL x BLACK-B. GULL hybrids, plus 6200 HERRING GULLS and 35 GREAT BLACK-B. GULLS. At the Lewiston docks, one of the few LITTLE GULL reports this winter, plus ICELAND GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL and numerous LONG-TAILED DUCKS. Feeding in the rapids at the Goat Island bridge, a rare adult GLAUCOUS GULL, and above the Three Sisters Islands, several each of THAYER'S GULL, ICELAND GULL, L. BLACK-B. GULL and GLAUCOUS GULL. Upper Niagara River reports - it appears the large flocks of BONAPARTE'S GULLS have relocated. At the Mid-River Marina on River Road in Tonawanda, 20 LESSER SCAUP, NORTHERN PINTAIL, NORTHERN SHOVELER, and over 20 GADWALLS. On the east shore of Strawberry Island, 132 GREAT BLUE HERONS and 3 BALD EAGLES. 785 TUNDRA SWANS between Strawberry Island, Motor Island and Beaver Island. Waterfowl stretching from Buckhorn Island State Park to the Peace Bridge and ice boom included abundant CANVASBACK, REDHEAD, GREATER SCAUP, BUFFLEHEAD, COMMON GOLDENEYE, COMMON MERGANSER and RED-BR. MERGANSER, with small numbers of RING-NECKED DUCKS and WHITE-WINGED SCOTER. Other waterfowl reports - BARROW'S GOLDENEYE continues with SURF SCOTER, WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, and BLACK SCOTER at Point Breeze on Lake Ontario in Carlton. Two AMERICAN WIGEONS on the creek at Forest Lawn in Buffalo, and 200 REDHEADS on the Union Canal at Lakeside Park in Lackawanna. Away from the Niagara River, a rare in winter RUBY-CR. KINGLET, February 3, in the Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area, along the canal west of Meadville Road. Through the Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area, GREAT BLUE HERON, 3 BALD EAGLES, 5 NORTHERN HARRIERS, PILEATED WOODPECKER, NORTHERN SHRIKE, 2 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS and six each of SONG SPARROW and SWAMP SPARROW. Also rare in winter, a YELLOW-B. SAPSUCKER at Como Lake County Park in Lancaster. North of the Iroquois Refuge, 10 SHORT-EARED OWLS holding on Posson Road in Shelby. In the Lake Ontario Plains this week, a SHORT-EARED OWL on the soccer fields at Fort Niagara State Park, and two hardy EASTERN MEADOWLARKS on Lake Road in Somerset. Flocks of 200 HORNED LARKS and 300 SNOW BUNTINGS in Porter, and a single LAPLAND LONGSPUR on Barber Road in Medina. The feeder highlights this week - on Hilltop Drive in Elma, 8 WHITE-W. CROSSBILLS, 25 COMMON REDPOLLS, 10 PINE SISKINS, SONG SPARROW and WHITE-CR. SPARROW. A pair of BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS in Boston, and 10 RED-W. BLACKBIRDS at the Tifft Nature Preserve feeders in Buffalo. Other reports this week - ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS at two locations. PEREGRINE FALCONS on both the north and south Grand Island bridges and the grain elevator at Gallaghers Beach in Buffalo. MERLIN chasing EUROPEAN STARLINGS at Route 75 and 20A in Hamburg. And, a RED-THROATED LOON stranded on Lake Ontario ice was rescued by the SPCA and released in good health on open water at Wilson Harbor.
