These days my birding is mostly limited to close to home or in the case of
Cupsogue, close to my parent's home. Drop off my son, get a lifer, short visit
and home again. Alas, different script today. After no success in about an hour
(although 4 black terns, 1 royal tern, and at least 1 arctic tern were seen
between ~ 0840- 0945) I announced to the mob at Cupsogue that I was "off to
Pike's to take it for the team." I didn't want to leave such good habitat
unchecked. After checking both sides of the peninsula (with the only shorebirds
being 5 piping plovers and willets) and part of the flats closer to Westhampton
Dunes Overlook I received the call from Bob Hayes..."we have the stint!"  12
minutes later (and I swear I didn't exceed the 25mph limit) I was completing my
second trek out to the flats, I still had a chance! The distant mob was looking
east  and I was approaching from the south, onward!  But apparently the bird
had just relocated to an area
closer to my approach and I may have even flushed the bird without knowing
it.. The bird was not seen again in the time that I was there ~1145. Still
trying to remember what terrible deed I committed in a past life to warrant
such misfortune. This one could sting for a while...
