Add some and lose some. That was the kind of data I got from shorebirding
today on the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.

The notable additions were another *AMERICAN AVOCET *making now 3 on the
pond and a *WILSON's PHALAROPE.*

Steve Walter and I did some mothing last night at the visitor's center
after a WEST POND stakeholder's meeting. We discussed whether we would see
many shorebirds leaving with the cold front. And what new birds might show
up.

Apparently, many shorebirds did leave and some did arrive. The number of
Semipalmated Sandpipers were shaved in half from Sunday's high of 2500 and
the Short-billed Dowitcher were also down. Other birds that may have pulled
out include STILT and PECTORAL SANDPIPER as well as LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER
none of the three were seen by me today.

However, I should add that I was not able to complete a full loop of the
pond before a PEREGRINE FALCON put most of the birds up and off the pond.
Although in flight most of the birds were peeps, there is always the
possibility that one of the 3 species, I did not see today were in the
spooked flock.

Other notable shorebirds seen were 2 WESTERN SANDPIPERS and one juvenile
LEAST SANDPIPER.

For those interested in the mothing results. The moth meister Mr. Walter,
tallied our total at 23 species not counting "Avocet Moth," which the
number would be 3 and not 2 as recorded last night :)

Cheers,

林 Quiet as the forest
火 Conquer like the fire
山 Steady as the mountain
