Greetings,
In case the locals are not “sniped out” by now, there are currently 3 Wilson’s
Snipes sleeping at the north end of the island. All in a 5’ radius of each
other. Green Wing Teals continue as well. Good Day!

I Stopped at Swan River Preserve after work today around 5 - the Parks
Department recently trimmed all of the old herbaceous growth which allows
great views of the pond even from the car. Without getting out I spotted a

It was very quiet - however there were two (2) pairs of green-winged teal

Around 7 PM I walked around the swan River preserve in east Patchogue. Small
birds were absent aside from chirping cardinals and the always present song
birds.
A bit of pond watching turned up some mallards, the resident swan (still with a
fishing hook / line attached) and great blue heron. S
Around 5:30 PM I visited Swan River Preserve in East Patchogue and spent a
good amount of time sitting adjacent to the spillway that enters the river
on the south side. I observed the following birds there:

Today at work I received a call from someone who, while raving about what a
great facility the Town's Swan Pond Preserve has become, complained of the
stagnant water, algal blooms and "lack of waterfowl to feed". I explained
to him how the pond system works, that it's been a very dry summer, and

An evening visit to the Swan River Preserve in East Patchogue (just south
of Swan Lake, Montauk Highway) yielded a continuing Glossy Ibis, a noisy
flock of Cedar Waxwings (largely feeding in the center island and hanging
on adjacent trees), an osprey being harassed by red-winged black birds, a

The other day there were two (2) blue-winged teal on the pond. This
morning, during a cleanup, I observed two (2) killdeer feeding on the
mudflats.
On a non-bird note, there are some rainbow trout in the river adjacent to
the ponds.
