Highlights of reports received April 29 through May 6 from the
Niagara Frontier Region include WARBLERS, WHITE-R. SANDPIPER and
WILLET.
Spring migration is approaching full speed and covering the entire
region. At least 22 warblers species were reported this week. A few of
the favored locations include Tifft Nature Preserve, Times Beach and
Forest Lawn in Buffalo, Amherst State Park, Goat Island in Niagara
Falls and Point Gratiot and Saint Columbans in Chautauqua County.
Also, backyards and night skies.
Warbler highlights included a reported WORM-EATING WARBLER April 30
and May 1 on Plaza Drive near Cayuga Drive in the Town of Niagara. At
Forest Lawn, ORANGE-CR. WARBLER on the ridge May 1 and GOLDEN-WING.
WARBLER east of the lake on the 5th. Other warblers - BLUE-WINGED
WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER,
CHESTNUT-S. WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, CAPE MAY WARBLER, BL.-THR. BL.
WARBLER, YELLOW-R. WARBLER, BL.-THR. GREEN WARB., BLACKBURNIAN
WARBLER, PINE WARBLER, PALM WARBLER, BL. AND W. WARBLER, AMERICAN
REDSTART, OVENBIRD, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT and
HOODED WARBLER, with more still to come or be reported.
Also, widely reported songbirds - LEAST FLYCATCHER, EASTERN
KINGBIRD, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, WARBLING VIREO, HOUSE WREN, WINTER WREN,
MARSH WREN, BL.-GR. GNATCATCHER, HERMIT THRUSH, WOOD THRUSH, GRAY
CATBIRD, BROWN THRASHER, CEDAR WAXWING, SCARLET TANAGER, EASTERN
TOWHEE, FOX SPARROW, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, WHITE-THR. SPARROW, WHITE-CR.
SPARROW, ROSE-BR. GROSBEAK, BOBOLINK and BALTIMORE ORIOLE. The night
of May 5, SWAINSON'S THRUSHES were heard migrating over the Town of
Tonawanda before a rainstorm.
In the marshes at Tifft Nature Preserve this week - BLUE-
WINGED TEAL, WOOD DUCK, HOODED MERGANSER, RUDDY DUCK, AMERICAN
BITTERN, LEAST BITTERN, GREEN HERON, BL.-CR. NIGHT-
HERON, VIRGINIA RAIL, SORA and COMMON MOORHEN, plus MERLIN, CASPIAN
TERN and RUSTY BLACKBIRD in the Preserve.
May 1, almost two weeks early, a WHITE-R. SANDPIPER at Johnson Creek
Road and Somerset-Hartland Townline, with GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, LEAST SANDPIPER and PECTORAL SANDPIPER. May 2, on the
north shore of Lake Erie in Ontario, 4 WILLETS, a shorebird known for
it's brief stopovers, at Harborview Road, west of Port Colborne.
Also May 2, 11 BLACK TERNS at one of their few or only breeding
sites in the region - Cayuga Pool in the Iroquois Refuge.
Other reports - a calling NOR. SAW-WHET OWL in the Cattaraugus
County Town of Hinsdale, and a RED-HEADED WDPKR. in a yard on Deer
Trail Road in Cheektowaga.
