That's the Jones Beach Boys that Andrew knew. But I started birding Jones
Beach around 1982 or so. Sy was one of the first birders I knew (and he was
always happy to chat and teach). The rest of the Jones Beach group then
included Al Wollin, Neil Ward, Stephen Dempsey, Manny Levine, and Matt
Bayer.
This is a tough loss especially for folks who were close to Sy. I spoke to his
dear and loyal friend Joe Giunta today and he is taking this very hard.
Coincidentally, I had spoken to Joe on the 7th, as I was curious to know if Sy
had seen the other SNCBC (Southern Nassau Christmas Bird Count
Very much a part of my birding education on Southern Nassau CBCs. If memory
serves me correctly, I got my life Fox Sparrow in his backyard. Condolences
to his friends and family.
