Students were present and asleep at the time, theft reported in morning on
discovery of missing items which included backpack bag, Apple WIFI booster,

Subject: [obsnw] Attempted kidnapping, other incidents

Some recent incidents in lower Obs, reported on the whatsapp groups:

* There was a very scary attempted kidnapping in Strubens Road yesterday
afternoon. See details below.
* Later that same evening, there was a robbery at gun-point in Crown
Street (less than a block away from this incident). Police were on the scene,
looking for the perpetrator who seemed to be on a motorbike (unclear whether he
arrived on the bike or stole it.)
* Last Sunday morning around 5am there were two attempted break-ins in
Alfred St cul-de-sac.
* On May 16th Police arrested a man who attempted to steal a laptop from
a house in Strubens Rd. He tried to escape through the attic, but police caught
him.

More details on the first incident, as posted yesterday in the lower Obs
whatsapp groups and on the facebook group:

Good evening. We reside at the end of Strubens Road where it corners with Lower
Wrensch Road. This afternoon at about 3:05/3:10, a tall coloured man, dressed
in all black and with dreadlocks (one of which is almost down to his ankles)
gained access through a locked back gate from an enclosed back yard, stuffed
some of my 7 year old son's clothes into a school bag and then tried to take my
7 year old son. My son was at home with my father as my mother had come to
collect me from work, but this man moved so quickly and covered my son's mouth
with his hand such that he couldn't scream. Once through the front door, my son
managed to hook his arms through the gate and hang onto the gate and scream,
causing the man to drop the bag and leave down Lower Wrensch road.I finish work
at 3 in Rondebosch and so I was home by 3:15. Police have taken statements. My
son is physically fine, though obviously shaken. Please be vigilent and if you
see this man, please contact the police or detective constable Mabelane at
0214862840 or 0719347478.
