Update: I gave up on trying to bring the volume online and simply used
voldump and vos restore. Had thought there would be complications
using a "last resort" tool but there were none that I could see. The
volume is completely restored with intact ACLs.

We´ve had that error with having entries in krb5.ini AND in DNS. Esp.
the kdm master and kdm passwd server entries were responsible

Thanks for this analysis. The increased UDP works pretty well for us at CERN so
far - albeit one limit gone other limits appear more pronounced.
