Sounds to me then that reading volume local on server would be an
improvement, since RX would be out of the picture.

We're using it without any problems. I have a equivalent patch that does
most of what Ken's does against krb5-current if you want it.
As for NT, works just fine, although aklog is usually a pain to get
built/etc.

If you're going to do it, I recommend that you use Maildir format spools.
That eliminates the need for locking entirely. It also lets you deliver into
the same spool simultaneously from multiple servers at the same time.
