I *really* hate to suggest this (since I often get annoyed with such software), but should OpenAFS occasionally check to see if updates exist and notify the user, especially on the Windows platform? (with all the opt-in/opt-out controls, of course, especially for corporate environments where updates are controlled.) As OpenAFS is deployed more widely on Windows, old, obsolete, bug ridden versions are going to become more and more a pain to support, and people will not know they could have improved functionality/reliability unless they get a "hint".
