I was able to compile openafs-1.6.0 for Scientific Linux 6 and copy the server binaries into /usr/afs/bin/. Now the salvager was able to clean up the corrupted backup volume. I hand't mentioned in my previous email, but presumably a related problem prevented "vos dump" from working (a zombie backup volume). This problem has been fixed too.
