Hi,
since you can log in as root you can find the file causing the issue if any
(there have been issues with log for the printer management in the past) or
just delete old Boot Environment if you can.
Once the space is reclaimed you might need to clear the services with
svcadm.

I have OpenIndiana installed as a guest virtualbox machine.
I can only log in as root for system maintenance.
I use this OS mainly for my mail communication, and therefore I've been shut
out of it!!

Thanks for pushing me in the right direction :)
Initially I looked at installing the packages by base FMRI which yielded "no
updates needed". Then I realized that the reported Java package names are at
0.151.8 level, which is not quite good nowadays. Tried "pkg unfreeze" just i
