Regarding this pcre commit:
The pcre version 6 comes with come c++ bindings which breaks the install
phase of the Makefile if no c++ compiler was installed and the libraries
wherend build. For now I have fixed it by installing the c++ bindings
only if the library was build.

Please excuse that I misplaced your mail. I think you asked
why testing __SVR4 is required as well as __sun when detecting
a Solaris OS at build time.
The reason is (or at least was) that some OS/Hardware/Compiler
combinations define __sun when there is no Solaris OS present.
