Did you disable the nwam service and enabled the normal
network/physical:default?

OK, since no one gave me a pointer to investigate this problem, I eventually
figured out how to get rid of the splash screen and see what happens.
svc.startd[7]: system/avahi-bridge-dsd:default failed fatally: transitioned to
maintenance (see 'svcs -xv' for details)
Looking at the log file
Open Nautilus window.
Go to your home directory.
Press Ctrl+H to show all hidden directories.
If not present, create a directory called .fonts (mkdir .fonts)
Copy your font files to that directory.
You should be able to see fonts added now.

#5 gui tool would be a very neat idea. Consider how there is a significant
lack of gui system administration tools equivalent to Windows' MMCs.
