From a coding standpoint, this might almost qualify for oss-bite-size, but since it changes the protocol and could involve bringing in new code from BSD, it would also seem a good simple case for getting an introduction to Sun's ARC and legal review processes.

Is something quite different with /usr/bin/talk on Solaris 10?
Solaris talk is still the ancient original BSD protocol, which isn't compatible between different endianness machines. It would be amazingly cool if someone finally fixed this (hint! hint! opensolaris anyone?) - I remember complaints over a decade ago about this, and people installing ytalk to work around it. I think the only reason no one complains much anymore is that most people have moved to instant messaging protocols like AIM, ICQ, etc. which are much more widespread and provide more user-friendly interfaces. Ready for a ride in the wayback machine? Check out this bug report on the issue, still open: http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=1011997 Sun-3!
