On OpenSolaris 2008.05 and later, software is managed using the pkg command.
There is also a GUI on the "System" menu under "Administration".
Updates for OpenSolaris *are* available - to update all packages to newer
versions use the command "pkg image-update". See
http://opensolaris.org/os/proj
To the best of my knowledge and belief, there are no patches for OpenSolaris;
the only way to remedy or otherwise correct an OpenSolaris installation is to
upgrade the system.
This is a sideeffect of running a development stream of the Solaris operating
system.
