Hi,
how many CPUs has your System? I've seen a load average of 7! For a single
CPU system that's by far too much! Seems like there are running some other
things too.

I'm having terrible performance problems right now
(trying to FTP a large file from a solaris server,
and only getting 8Mbit on 10/100 LAN)

Notice: in.ftpd is consuming nearly all the CPU, and
the system is spending 98% in kernel time.
Profile the kernel to find out what code
consumes
