I have the same problem but strangely not all the time and a reboot of the
virtual machine has so far solved the problem. It looks like this happens for
me the first time I boot the virtual machine after the host machine has
rebooted.

I use workstation... and have had wierd things with the
bridged network. Remember, you are piling a second IP onto
a single MAC address, so things like DHCP and ARPing are
sometimes broken. This can also cause problems with some
network switches that actually care about the traffic coming

Hmm - it seems pinging doesn't work. I don't really know what is going on here
as the interface comes up OK, just won't send and receive. I'll just double
check the VMWare setup isn't borked
Yes, the virtual NIC is bridged onto VMnet0, the default config.
