I fixed this by moving /usr/lib/firefox to /usr/lib/firefox.3.5.7.bad Then I installed firefox 3.6.2 from a tarball. This firefox worked, so I moved that /usr/lib/firefox to /usr/lib/firefox_3.6.2 and made a link /usr/lib/firefox -> /usr/lib/firefox_3.6.2.
