It turns out that I can actually install nv-68 in a VMware virtual machine
from the ISO Cds, so it looks like there's some issue with my
dell precision 670 that causes the system to panic when the
device discovery phase begins ... this does not happen with my
nv-63 installation (sorry, it was nv-6

Bill's CD does actually boot, and apparently displays a menu and stuff; so
can't be this problem.
