Thanks Peter, for your suggestion about
System->Preferences->Startup Applications
I wasn't able to figure out which of the items controlled the screensaver,
or perhaps it was automagically removed from the list since I already
removed the /etc/xdg/autostart/xscreensaver.desktop file, then reboot
I'm running snv_133, and I did
# rm /etc/xdg/autostart/xscreensaver.desktop
as you suggested. Better now. Thanks.
