We are a big Linux/SAP customer, running Linux wherever it makes sense. I
recently played with SAP on Solaris/x86_64 in Zones and it's pretty awesome
compared to what you can do on Linux. I wouldn't say we completely switch
over to Solaris but certain systems will surely run in the future on Solaris
just by the fact, that we can host them together easily on ONE box.

If Linux is coming out sometimes soon with XEN we will also look in that
type of virtualization and will decide, what fits our needs better.

SAP on Linux works VERY well, has a good infrastructure to manage update
accross multiple servers and is even well suited for the big boxes (DualCore
4-way systems with > 32 GB RAM). Our main production system is running
Linux/IA64 instead of HP-UX because it did perform better and was easier to
manage. So in fact there is no need for us to switch or even look at
something different because we're quite happy, BUT in certain areas
(especially when it comes to zones) Solaris has a big + on its side and it
would be (in my eyes as an administrator) grossly negligent to ignore that
fact just to stay with a homogeneous environment.

A big minus is the non-intuitive setups of servers (LUNs, harddisks,
partitions, slices, raw devices) - there is no single working (!)
application for someone, who's not that familiar with cli to just format a
disk or create soft partitions for a database raw device access.

However, the the whole idea is not from the management but IT driven, my
chief could live well with that one-box-one-application thing but out of my
view there must be other ways.

Just my EUR 0.02
