Well, I got further. I at least managed to get the graphical window up and
select the operating system.
It still failed, however,

Solaris 2009-6 installed on a Toshiba A10 laptop; it is about 5 years old.
I attach a 1.5Tb USB external hard drive. On boot, Solaris complains that it is
too large for a 32 bit system. Consequentially, it doesn't show up in rmformat.
This drive had previously been plugged in to a 64 bit machine
Installing on the 8gig card didn't work...
bootadm_update_menu output: bootadm: fstyp -a on device /dev/rdsk/c7d0s0 failed
That leaves me to try an install on the freshly boot record wiped 16gig ... and
if that fails, I think I'll go shoot myself / kick a bucket / scream until my
own ears bleed
Just learned about this...
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb bs=512 count=1
... to wreck the mbr of the memory card.
The installation on the other memory card is scheduled to take about an hour.
This is going to be interesting.

a) The SD card has gone faulty.
b) I didn't wipe the card sufficiently after the first installation went wrong.
... to test this, I'm installing on a separate 8gig card now.

Got the partition mounted under live cd.
There are no log files in /var/sadm/system/logs/install
There is no menu..lst in /boot/grub/
How did the install, itself, complete with no problems or errors?
I am at a complete loss.

A geometry (hd0) gives the following...

I also know that hd0,0 is correct (or must be correct) as the find command
causes the light to flash. changing the first 0 results in "no such disk
drive," changing the second 0 results in "no partition."
So, I'm stuck in a corner.

This is strange.
I try...

... it comes back with ...

It is as if it doesn't know what partition is what.

I don't even get the splash screen.
The machine goes from the initial POST screen, to booting GRUB and then the
screen immediately clears and I end up with the grub prompt. Once the BIOS
passes to the bootloader, It all fails very quickly and efficiently. The only

It seems there are a lot of problems with upgrades to 130. I had some problems
with VX Revolution, but after a reinstall they mysteriously disappeared.

Turns out my problem is caused by something wrong with booting from the first
disk (in the list, it was the second installed).
As long as I boot from the disk that I originally installed onto it works.
I have tried rerunning the installgrub command on the first disk patition

This sound very similar to my problem.
I have a mirrored boot disk on an AMD64 platform.
I performed a pkg --auto-update (can not remember the command), I believe it
installed to packages.
Rebooted.
Grub load gives the menu boots from "Solaris-1".
Gets the splash screen up and sits there for
