Not sure what happened there. Did you do the installation using a physical CD
or did you boot the VM off of the .iso file?

Just out of curiosity, why are folks still using NIS? Isn't it horribly
insecure? Is it still being used out of familiarity? It seems like OpenDS would
be a better solution to directory services.

All the time, it's called SSH ;-) The real question is why do you want a
graphical interface to your remote OpenSolaris box? If it's to run the GUI

Have you tried SSH'ing to the OpenSolaris box using a UNIX SSH Client
(OpenSolaris, Linux, Mac)? It'd be interesting to see if they fail as well.
I've seen PuTTY and any of the other psuedo UNIX SSH clients on Windows behave
strangely in the past.

I've found that upgrading my OpenSolaris installation to build 99 gives me an

Is there a way I can specify a different build to upgrade to? Basically, I want

Are there any guides that walk you through setting up a simple LDAP server on
OpenSolaris? Basically, I just want an LDAP server to authenticate users from

After having installed OpenSolaris 2008.05 if I run a "pkg refresh" followed by

How about downloading the necessary driver software to a USB thumb drive and
then using that to access the files from Solaris. I believe that most USB
drives are formatted using the FAT filesystem, which I believe Solaris should
be able to mount.

Yes - that's pretty much the way X has worked on all Linux & Unix'es
for the past 20 years. You need to set the DISPLAY environment
variable to :0, using either:
DISPLAY=:0 ; export DISPLAY
setenv DISPLAY :0
depending on what shell you use (bourne style or csh style).
