I wanted to try something...
I deleted the /var/log/wtmp
Untarred a fresh openssh-6.0p1 tarball
Proceeded as usual:
fBSD9 > ./configure --with-zlib=/usr/local --with-ssl-dir=/usr/local
fBSD9 > make
It went through!

Yes, I am starting each attempt (from the very first one when I
