Geoff, After having read what you had to say about the the duality of zero-valued BIGNUMs, all I can say, which works for *me*, is go ahead and clean this up. If you want to be cautious (which I assume you do), do it in 0.9.8-dev only, since we don't guarantee binary compatibility with 0.9.7x
