distributions (I know) use these version numbers as sonames. So this is
correct.
But it is not enough, because as I said, different libraries could link
against different (major) versions of openssl and so cause conflicts.

Argh, you are right. When I tried to verify the problem. I only testet
the 0.9.6g binary but had the 0.9.6c libraries installed. So I assume,
the submitter of the bug made a similar mistake.
Sorry, to bug you.

The best solution would be to have a separated openssl archive with
all the nonfree parts in it, so that we would have a completely free
openssl base package with a nonfree addon. GnuPG uses the same method.
What do you think about that?

Hi,
I suppose we have a problem with the openssl library.
telnet-ssl comes from netkit-telnet, which itself does not show the
problems. telnet-ssl has the patches from the former SSLtelnet
included. I have reproduced the problem with openssl 0.9.3a and
0.9.4.

Hi
While packaging ssleay for Debian Linux, I did some patches to the
Makefiles to have shared library support using libtool. The patches
should be fairly generic, so it should work on most plattforms. If
you are interested in it, I can send them out to the list. It supports
