grab a recent snapshot to see how much has happened. If you're in
USA, then they probably won't include patches from you in openssl.

I've just compiled openssl-0.9.5beta2 without trouble on
solaris-sparcv9-gcc and linux-elf (Redhat 5.2 and 6.1).
The solaris had to be told that it wasn't unixware, but
I suppose that should be fixed by now.
