As it turns out, I have tried to compile the package using the 0.9.7d
version but I get a very similar problem. See below:

I downloaded openssl-0.9.4 yesterday for installation on a Unix box
running solaris 2.6. The configuration went fine apparently but when
I try to make the openssl binary, it fails. The compilation seems to
have gone fine but ld complains.
