I left this out intentionally as it _might_ break compatibility. Additionally: the people concerned about this problem seem to be the OpenCA developers and users and they are using openssl-0.9.7-dev snapshots because of required extensions anyway. Of course, I could easily apply the same change to 0.9.6-stable, if this is considered useful.
