Further to the earlier missive suggesting an OpenSSL library clash, as
it was "destest" that crashed, it is likely there is another DES library
in your path, which may not be from OpenSSL.
Try running "destest" manually and finding out a little more
information, like where exactly it crashed.
I offer another data point:
I just built 0.9.6g on an Ultra 1 running Solaris 8 with gcc 2.95.2.
I configured with:
./config -shared
The make succeeded, but make test looks like this:
