I generally agree, but beware that at least one widely used brand of
mail software is known to have (or
at least have had) a bug that makes the check for mailing lists not work
correctly. They acknowledged
this as a bug and provided various partial bugfixes and workarounds,
which were so hard to install
the many sysadmins didn't. With the common aggressive patching policy
these days, there may be
few remaining installations of that particular buggy system, but other
mail clients/servers may have
similar bugs.
The point is, the hapless user may have set it to "do not autorespond to
mail lists", but the software
does it anyway while the user is out of the office and don't see the mayhem.
