This is quite possible to do, and in fact one thing that we keep in mind with
every Swift release: deployers must be able to upgrade without any lapse in
availability.
The basic steps are:
- stop background processes
- upgrade packages (system and/or swift)
- restart processes
- start background

My group downloads and installs the Openstack Swift of version 1.4
and wants to upgrade it to 1.8. However, we don't want to abandon all
the data we have collected during the period. Does anyone can tell me
how to upgrade the swift without dropping all the data?
