We are using Openvswitch in our Openstack setup.

We experience openvswitch failures from time to time. It seems to happen
random, no network traffic spikes for example.

Would you describe your current situation as "stable"? IIRC there are no
known instabilities esp. with OpenStack.
To add here:
it is always recommended to update (not upgrade) to latest version. If
there are know security issues, you should update to latest bugfix asap.
