To answer your first question, you only need one AMQP messenger, RabbitMQ and qpid are simply two different options. RabbitMQ is the default, but RedHat tends to lean towards qpid (for instance RDO, openstack.redhat.com, uses qpid). Because RabbitMQ is the default, you'll need to change rpc_backend
