This started to work way better after the latest update, which brought
in a newer version of libgphoto2. I still have to try several times
before I can get Digikam to connect, but it is finally usable again.

I may be ignorant, but wouldn't it be possible to use the Umass
driver? I hope the powershot can be set to act like a simple USB mass
storage device, and not only to Pictbridge.
You would need to set it somewhere in the menu.
