[opensuse] how do I know if I hit a certain ulimit and how to find knowledge of ulimit?

Dear list I am in the process of learning to manage ulimits. I feel I must have hit some limits in one of my boxes but as I am googling around most information about ulimits are very very brief. It's explained how to set soft or hard limits but not mentioned what's the current status. e.g. I know
