OK. 
The some other exception problem was symptom of known bug, corrupt 
  /var/cache/zypper/zypper.db
which can be deleted and recreated with 
  zypper ref
or simply by starting YaST Software Management. 

Maybe very verbose 
  zypper -vvvv ref
will give more information, if needed. 
I would recommend to use the same -vvvv for installation etc.
