Very short answer: Master and slave share binaries, so they should use
the "same kind" of operating system (e.g. 32bit Linux). Easiest way is
to install two identical base systems. Using the virtual appliance as
slave server should work flawless, though I've never tried the VM.

The slave setup guide should be sufficient for anybody with basic
Linux/UNIX knowledge - from my point of view. But it seems you're
desperately trying to the your slave up and running, I'll try to clarify
things, though this is not the scope of this mailing list.

I a trying to generate reports but it does not work from Web UI (generating
Adhoc report) and CLI. Opsview is "Build: 3.5.1.3761" and OS is a "Ubuntu
8.04.3 LTS" and java (as recommended) is at version 5. See below for java debug
