Thanks for that information but I'm still a little confused.
I've now made a change to the host template by adding a service check. I've
done a reload but the hosts that have the template aren't showing the new
service check?
What have I missed?

I encountered an issue where query_host results in "Incorrect Output" in the UI.
Investigating I discovered that this occurs if the host returns an
empty sysDescr field:
I'm not sure if this is the best fix but changing:
$sysdescr =~ s/\s*[\r\n].*//g;
To
$sysdescr =~ s/\s*[\r\n].*/ /g;
