Python is what they will really be working with, but solid C++ or Java skills will make it a pretty seamless transition. They need to have strong SQL skills. They should have large scale application experience. Gauss is very intricate and deals with derivative products. They need to know basic things about derivatives. Ex: what is an Interest Rate Curve? what is an FX swap? Where does it go? A plus would be exposure to large scale risk systems.
