I use SQL*Plus running under emacs shell every day. It is my preferred way of:
- Recording my sqlplus sessions so I can go back and search to see
what I did
- having an up-arrow comand history capability
- Having line editing capability
- editing SQL scripts in the same window where I am

Hi Niall,
not bad news at all ;-))
And remember: objects in the rear view
mirror may appear closer than they are.
I'm still here holding hands with a
customer while a very large application
and the main database are updated.
By now everything looks fine.
Nice weekend to everyone,
Guido
How do I search the archives of this list?
thanks,

Hi Tanel , I was preparing for the 9i performance tuning exam , that is why
I was dealing with stuff like DBMS_SHARED_POOL.ABORTED_REQUEST_THRESHOLD.
I know its even below the last possible thing you would want to tune in
real life, but theoretical stuff seems to be a favourite with ocp
sometimes.
Yeah, well them kids are real good at the
pointy clicky stuff, and a minority actually
know how to do some real programming.
But the vast majority of them treat their computers
like cars. They know how to drive them, but are
clueless about how they work.
We're still from outer space.

I used onames on 8.1.7 without a problem.
It's the secondary server, but it always works.

You have a table called POS?
I've seen whole systems called that.

In addition to Matthew's comments, I might add that
all Veritas documentation is available at support.veritas.com.

I own the list, that is, the logical entity.

Don't know why some posts appear before others, could
be a simple explanation, could be a very complex one.
Not being a mail expert, I don't know which it is.

Hopefully, your analogy will not result in someone's attempt to
pour Castrol motor oil in their PC to make it run better.
As for being from the outer space, my origins are at Ursa Major.

Lately I've found that going to http://www.google.com, then searching for
oracle-l and the terms I'm interested in pulls up hits from
http://www.faqchest.com that will give you great results. You can go to
faqchest directly but they suggest hitting Google first.

Hi Gurus,
After upgrading the OS from AIX 4.3.3 to 5.1, our
Oracle 8i instance is dishing out plenty of ORA-1652
which means that our application cannot commit any
transactions (or so I am finding in my tests).
Help. The warehouse needs to be in production
tomorrow!
Thanks,

Hi Mladen,
Ursa Major? Have been there some years ago.
Beautiful landscape, but too much hairy animals ;-))
But it was just a stop-over on my way to the gamma quadrant
with the USS Voyager where I met Seven of Nine.
Nice memory 8-)))
And about my origins: I have to confess: I was born

Your 1652 error means the following:
01652, 0, unable to extend temp segment by %s in tablespace %s
// *Cause: Failed to allocate an extent for temp segment in tablespace.
// *Action: Use ALTER TABLESPACE ADD DATAFILE statement to add one or more
// files to the tablespace indicated.
From the docs...
ORA-01652 unable to extend temp segment by string in tablespace string
Cause: Failed to allocate an extent for temporary segment in tablespace.
Action: Use ALTER TABLESPACE ADD DATAFILE statement to add one or more
files to the tablespace indicated.
So Check your Temp TBS.
Ursa Major means great bear. As there is a connection between
bears and the nickname that I've had ever since my childhood (no,
I'm not going to reveal it), my assumption is that I have, somehow,
originated there.

Exactly. However, less than 24 hours ago these queries
(dynamically generated by the application) were
working fine and our TEMP space looked healthy. So I
did what you suggested; now TEMP is 4GB larger than it
used to be, and I'm still running into the same error.
I'm watching the TEMP space fill
Unix Solaris 8 and Oracle 8.1.7.4
As part of an upgrade to the Maximo application I run a join on 2
tables:
select count(*) from sys.syskeys s, maxsysindexes m where
s.ixname=m.name;
sys.syskeys is 705 rows and maxsysindexes is 443 rows.
when I trace the statement I find it doing a hash join
We are using 32-bit on 5L. I don't think Oracle 8.1.7
is compatible with 64-bit AIX kernel.
